Animal Cruelty in the Fashion Industry

The Fashion Industry has become a fast paced business in which clothing that is termed 'in' one month is 'out' by the next. Animal material has been historically used for clothing, but the demand for fur has created specific cruel treatment of animals sought after for their skin.

There is an assumption that the leathers and fur used in fashion are just the byproduct of animals used already for produce. This is not accurate. The fashion industry is separately responsible for the inhumane treatment of animals used for their fur and the environmental consequences.

The animal rights organisation Four Paws states the majority source of The Global Fur Trade to come from animals on fur farms that are contained in small cages before being used for their fur. These animals are bred or caught in the wild to live in cruel conditions to become part of the luxury fashion industry.

Leather is a popular resource that is specifically sought after and farmed. Contrary to popular belief, the material is not just gathered as part of a by-product when cows are used for food. Four Paws describes the leather industry to be non-transparent with where the material comes from and the treatment of the animals.

This is why Mela Verde was founded with vegan and sustainable principles.
